Dear Democrats
Article by Audrey Hopper, TPT Staff Writer
Dear Democrats,
The younger generation needs your help. We can’t save this country alone. When you’re trying to find your place in life it helps to have role models, people who show you what your future could be. For years you have fought and influenced needed progressive change; thank you for all you have done so far. The fight is far from over with the looming threats of MAGA Republicans, and we can only do so much without your support. We look to you to see how to fight for our freedoms; if you don’t fight, then who will?
I recently started phone banking with my local chapter of the Florida Democratic Party. When older individuals answer their phone, I am met with a chorus of “I don’t have the time” or “I am too old for this”. This does not give me hope; it does not give me someone to look up to. The excuses I’ve heard are common and relatable to many people, being too busy or not being young anymore. But that does not excuse inaction. Many young people involved in activism go to school for eight or more hours a day, have after school jobs and responsibilities, and yet they still find the time to be active in politics. To pass the torch should be met with enthusiasm and support for those who pick it up, not with grumbling and negativity from those handing it off. Many people of varying ages openly complain about the current political and social conflicts but refuse to take action. Voting can cause change, but if you refuse to vote and educate those around you then how do you expect change to happen?
The work you’ve done has been incredible and we thank you for it. With the rise in technology, the platforms from which to talk about politics have changed. There are now ways to volunteer from home that take less time. Phone banking, sharing information via social media, and having open discussions are just a few options for activism. Limited time and extenuating circumstances always influence the ability to volunteer but the options for volunteering are more diverse than ever. For people of all ages, contacting your local political party for ways to volunteer can give more ideas of ways to get involved. The simplest way to be politically active is to vote; if you're over 18 voting is the best way to ensure your voice is heard.
Dear Democrats,
The pleas from young democrats are there, please listen to us. Frustration is abounding in circles of young activists. We can only do so much without the support of the previous generations. The lack of action from many Democrats makes the party look complacent when, in reality, many are outraged but waiting for someone else to take action; to put in the work.
Please take action with us. We can not do this alone. There is strength in numbers, if all work together for a common goal more will be accomplished. If you are bothered by the current state of the American government, then please vote and volunteer. Be an activist, not a bystander.
Sincerely,
The next generation of Democrats and activists
